Description on YouTube We have written two books on BYRCs! They document all the engineering, design, plans and process! Check out our website Anyone who builds a backyard roller coaster also assumes responsibility for safety. I'm a retired Boeing engineer, who likes to see my grandchildren have fun. This is my grandson Rio riding the 3D-02 track on the new 3D-07 cart. I could design and fabricate a motorized lift system, but I don't for several reasons: 1) having to push the cart and rider up the lift hill guarantees adult supervision, 2) a chain lift could be dangerous (any lift system strong enough to lift the coaster would also be able to cut your hand off), and 3) it would cost more. I only have about $800 into this coaster. You can see another video where I sent this same cart around with 230 pounds of dead weight strapped to it, so this coaster is "qualified" for a 130 pound rider, with a factor of safety of 1.5. But, like anything with an element of danger, the most important safety features are our rules and discipline to keep to them. This is my second of three backyard roller coasters. I could also do a loop, but I've calculated that I would need about 18 feet of drop to do it safely, and I don't want to go that high. I use hot sand and forms to pre-form the schedule 40 PVC conduit rails. Preformed rails have less stress at the joint screws. My one remaining concern is how well the PVC conduit plastic rails will will hold up in sunlight. I'm not too worried about the strength and stiffness, but the impact resistance degrades in UV sunlight. I have done some impact testing, and am conditioning more test specimens in sunlight.
