This video was taken by one of our guides - Hashim - in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. A large pride of lions have caught a young male buffalo and are trying to bring him down. Look for the male lion with his mouth clamped over the snout of the buffalo, his foot behind its horns as he struggles to stay in place. He is trying to suffocate the bull. Meanwhile a group of lionesses are behind the buffalo, hanging onto its hind quarters, upper legs and tail to prevent it being able to move and dislodge the male from its nose and mouth. Other lionesses dart in to bite at its scrotum and soft area between its rear legs, trying to weaken the animals. You can see how cautious they are as one kick out with its hooves could inflict a life-threatening injury to the lions. A couple of times the buffalo swings its head and the male lion clings on, knowing that if he can stay there there is a big meal ahead. You can hear the buffalo bellowing and as the video goes on (Its just over 3 minutes 30 seconds) you can hear the laboured breathing as it starts to fight for breath. It took the lions another 15 minutes to get the buffalo down and a further 2 or three to finally kill it and start eating. Even for a pride this size, its a good meal. http://www.realafrica.co.uk
