Repeat upload. Last one blocked by copyright owners of music. Portrait in oils, using the technique of painting a detailed monochrome under-painting (a grisaille) first, and layering colours over it. Photos taken every 3 minutes. About 70 hours in total. Photo viewable on www.vicharris.co.uk or http Because so many people ask, I'll explain the black lines. I work from a photo using a grid. The grid lines are numbered at the edges so that I can locate specific squares. When the painting starts the grid gets covered, but I leave the numbers at the edges exposed. During the painting phase it is easy to drift on important landmarks, which seriously affects the likeness of the portrait. I therefore use elasticated cotton loops (the black lines) positioned using the exposed numbers at the edges to locate specific squares, again to check accuracy. When I'm happy with the likeness I paint over the edges

A time lapse film of my painting of Billy, a stunning chestnut horse. I made it using pastel pencils on sanded paper (Fisher 400). This was a commission for Billy's owners, and the painting is about 14x10". I hope you enjoy watching. To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The horse is done entirely with pastel pencils. Mostly I use Faber Castell & Schwann CarbOthello. I used to use Derwent, but have had quality issues so I've stopped using them and cannot recommend them. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested. I now do some tuition (message me if interested), and I make these videos from time to time because people seem to enjoy watching the process. Hope you do too... happy viewing!
