Khmer Buddhist chanting (Khmer Smot by lok ta Hun Horm and Balat Un) Hun Horm (later known as Hun Kang) was born in 1924 in Phum Kbal Domrey on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He went to live in a Buddhist temple, Wat Taingkrasaing Kharng Tbaung in Pochentong when he was only 8 years old. He was ordained as a novice Buddhist monk at the age of 12 in 1936. Hun Horm soon moved to reside at Wat Slaing Taing Roneam in Phum Pror Veng Phong Tek. He showed an aptitude for chanting (in Khmer known as smot) and moved to the city of Phnom Penh so he could learn more. In Phnom Penh, he lived at Wat Svaydangkhum. The abbot of the temple introduced him to Balat Un so he could learn chanting from a master. Balat is an honorific used in Cambodia to indicate respect. Balat Un had been a monk when he was younger. He was one of the best-known and most accomplished chanters in Cambodia at the time. He was then 60 years of age and lived by himself in a small house on stilts near the compound of Wat Sampov Meas. His wife had died and his two children had grown up and left home. He taught chanting to students who were sent to him from various temples around Phnom Penh, except Wat thoameyut (the Buddhist temples which belong to the Dharma Yutti) did not send any monk to learn to smot. Hun Horm went to Balat Un's house for lessons. He also practiced chanting at home in the temple and on the way to and from Balat Un's house. At Balat Un's instruction, Hun tied a piece of pork fat on thread ...

Wat Siri Hui-Manam Thai Malaysia BU-10, Amphur Sop Moei, Changwat, Mae Hong Son, Thailand. Monk in-charge: Bhante Huat How to go there: Sited at North-West Thailand, from Chiang Mai take a bus to Mae Sariang (4 hours), then take another bus trip from here to Sop Moei (20km++). At Sop Moei find the 'Mae Ngao National Park' which is around 10km++. At 'Mae Ngao National Park' ask the ranger or the officer in-charge how to get to 'Hui-Manam Village'. It is around 30km++ from the park to the village. You can walk up there or if you are lucky you can hitch hike a jeep if they pass by there. This village do not have electricity and also any phone line connection, so be prepared. This is a poor village of Kariang people. Therefore please take this opportunity to do charity if you intend to visit this village. Look for the monk and he will be able to help you in languages. He can speak a few language, namely Mandarin, Hokkien, Thai and Malay. This will sure be a great adventure if you can make it _/\_ sadhu. **Presently a group of friends here is collecting charity for the building of this Buddhist temple and also for the building of elementary school (primary school) there, eg classroom, tables, chairs, toilets etc. for the village there.** ** GPS address for the 'Mae Ngao National Park'.
