[READ THIS] I'm not Catholic or Christian or Anglican or in any way religious. I just like the music. So you can take your screaming religious comments. negative or otherwise, and shove them up your asphalt. This is the first bearable song in Sister Act. I was meaning to write a long, meaningful and thoughtful description...but I can' be bothered so... Enjoy. Medieval Chant of the Templars. Era of the Crusades. Title: "Antiphona: Salve Regina". This is part of the chant (first 10 minutes out of approximately 15). Performers: Ensemble Organum, Director: Marcel Peres Album: "Le chant des Templiers" ~ Latin: Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae, vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve. O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi. ~ English: Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Gregorian chant notation from the Liber Usualis (1961), p. 279. Latin lyrics sung by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos.
This song was taken from a manuscript originally located in the basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. It was used by the Order of the Temple of Solomon (The Knights Templar). The opening sequence was filmed in Canterbury Cathedral. The bronze effigy is the tomb of Edward The Black Prince (1330-1376). The tomb is situated in Canterbury Cathedral. The crown is the only object in Richard II's inventory which survives today and is the oldest surviving crown of England c. 1380. The 'Wilton Diptych' was painted as a portable altarpiece for the private devotion of King Richard II who ruled England from 1377 to 1399. Now displayed at the National Gallery London. Richard II is presented by three saints to the Virgin and Child and a company of eleven angels. Nearest to Richard is his patron saint John the Baptist. Behind are Saint Edward the Confessor and Saint Edmund, earlier English kings who came to be venerated as saints. The "Salve Regina" is one of four Marian antiphons sung at different seasons with in the Christian liturgical calendar of the Western Churches. The Salve Regina is sung in the time from Trinity Sunday until the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent. In the vernacular as a prayer to the Virgin Mary, the Hail Holy Queen is the final prayer of the Rosary. The work was composed during the Middle Ages most probably by a German monk Hermann of Reichenau and originally appeared in Latin, the prevalent language of Western Christianity until modern times. Traditionally it has been sung in Latin, though many translations exist. These are often used as spoken prayers. O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, the children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this land of exile. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; lead us home at last and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

The texts Philips uses are so often ones which have a special resonance for Catholics whose devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and whose commitment to a sacramental liturgy was under attack. Time and time again he uses extremely beautiful, emotionally-charged settings which are strongly related to Catholic spirituality. The Salve Regina is graphically and emotionally treated. The word 'clamamus' the exiled children of Eve, crying out, appears as the climax of a series of imitative entries while 'suspiramus' (we sigh) is punctuated by rests in an almost madrigalian depiction of the idea. The closing acclamations in the last part of the motet, O Clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria, are given loving treatment as a sign of devotion and reverence to the Blessed Virgin.
