He was born in the village of Luna in Rajasthan, British India in 1927 into a family of rich traditional musicians. He claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant. Kala means "Art" and Kalawant means "artist" (in any Indian language). He received his musical training under his father, Ustad Azeem Khan and his uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were classical musicians, well-versed in dhrupad singing. They instructed him in classical music and voice production within the framework of classical forms of thumri, dhrupad, khayal and dadra, from the young age of eight. Hassan started to perform at a young age and the first concert of dhrupad and kheyal with his elder brother is reported to have been held in Fazilka Bungla near Ferozepur[1]. While previous song was my choice for away-lovers, this one is valid for close-enuf ones :-) Excellent lyrics by My Fav Romantic Song Lyricist Akhtar Yousuf and composed by last of the popular music director Robin Ghosh sung well by Mehdi Hassan as usual. I remember someone in 2000 asked me to compile sweet songs for his wedding night and this song was included in it alongwith Indian songs and he told me next morning that the couple enjoyed playing my collection of "Vasl ke Geet" in low voice at their wedding night. I couldn't find a single upload of this song in its album version on Youtube. Almost all were live recordings. This ghazal has been sung by the likes of Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But to me, this is the best version. Its dark, brooding and I love it that way! Perhaps one of the best ghazals Hariharan has ever sung. The lyrics are in the video. Hope you enjoy it! :)
