This stotram has composed by sri Adi Shankara charya .Many verses glorifying the beauty and Divinity of Sree Mata. The One composition that we adore most is the famous ' Ayi Giri Nandini' Stotram'. Every Stanza in the song ends with this refrain 'Jaya jaya he Mahisasura MArdini Ramya kapardini Shailasuthe . Mahisasura (The evil) is no less powerful, in fact it is powerful than the Mightier, the gods. He is intelligent, brave and strong. All the gods come together and create a power "Shakti" which has the combination of all powers from all the gods together. This is manifested in the form of Durga. or nine days a fierce battle was fought. Mahisa changed forms many times from Buffalo to Lion to man to elephant every time putting up stiff resistance. But Durga's infinite power (shakti) was finally able to pin down Mahisa 's buffalo form beneath her foot and she thrusts her spear into his heart and her mighty sword cuts his head into two while her mount lion (tiger) attacks mahisa's groins! In the myth, with her charm and valour, she lures Mahisha and finally overpowers him. And along with Durga Mata we are also saluting the Demon Mahisasur under her feet. Yes, when slain by the great goddess Durga, Mahisasur attained Moksha or salvation at her Lotus feet ! . This imagery is very powerful as well as very symbolic -- the triumph of Good over evil. This hypnotic hymn is not for the weak of heart or for those in mental or emotional comfort zones. It depicts the gory details of a woman slaying a buffalo-demon. Acceptance of this 'unsanitized spirituality' hymn to Mother requires unflinching devotion and moral fibres stronger than steel, such as belonged to Sri Ramkrishna Parmahamsa. Popularly, this hymn is ascribed to Bhagavatpada Jagadguru Sri Adya Shankaracharya. However, like many works which are said to be his, this may or may not be so. There are several versions of this hymn, including regional variations as it is immensely popular across Bharat. Mahishasura Mardini Stotram: This is a stotram with flowing yet ringing sounds. The stotram sounds simply wash over a listener irrespective of whether one understand the meaning or not. It is unclear when exactly and who composed this exemplary stotram, the sound of which is both soothing and agitating at the same time. Some believe this very popular stotram of Goddess Durga was written by Ramakrishna Kavi. Nothing more is known about the author. Tenali Rama was also known as Ramakrishna and he was a devotee of Durga. But there is no clear evidence that he wrote this. Some believe it is by Adi Shankaracharya who wrote this in a blitz of sudden divine inspiration. Adi Shankara was not really known as a devotee of Durga and most of his other known compositions are full of philosophical meaning and not just blissful play of sounds in praise of Gods or Goddesses. Due to its very poetic nature and repetition of words in the same stanza but with enormously different meanings, this strotram is extremely difficult to translate. Any translation reads extremely disjointed - as if the lyricist just moved from beautiful flowers to a ferocious battle between one word and the very next. It is the musical play of sounds and not meaning of the words that make this stotram truly remarkable.
