2008. 3rd February, Sunday Trafó, Budapest Smt. Kaushiki Chakrabarty - Vocal (www.kaushiki.net Hiranmay Mitra - Harmonium Shahbaz Hussain - Tabla Christian Ledoux - Tampura The concert took place at Trafo (Budapest, Hungary) on 03.02.2008. as the 5th concert of the Masters of Indian Classical Music Series. More about the concert series: india.tilos.hu Smt. Kaushiki Chakrabarty was born in 1980 in the campus of Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, Kaushiki Chakrabarty is now a scholar of the academy. The gurus of the Academy and the members of its Expert Committe repose a great hope in Kaushiki and have blessed her for a glorious musical future. By the grace of God, she could reproduce any musical and rhythmic phrase when she was only two years old. Kaushiki's mother, Chandna Chakrabarty was her first guru and very soon, Kaushiki became a "ganda-bandh" sagird (disciple) of her father's guru, Jnan Prakash Ghosh according to India's ancient system of guru-shishya parampara. On account of the old age of her guru and with his consent, she resumed her training under her father, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty.

Kaushiki Chakrabarty sings the first part of 'Yaad Piya Ki Aaye', a semi-classical thumri-piece, more specific: a dadra. The song was created, sung and made famous by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. You can listen to the remainder of the song in another video via www.youtube.com here on my channel. This is a recording of Kaushiki's concert in the Royal Tropical Institute of Amsterdam, on April 15th, 2007. On tabla: Subhashish Bhattacharjee ; on harmonium: Vyasmurti Anandteerth Katti ; on tanpura: Julia Ohrmann. The pictures are stills of my video-interview with Kaushiki a few days before this concert, an interview that was used for my video-portrait on her that's published here on my youtube-channel. FROM 5'35 UNTIL THE END YOU CAN ALSO WATCH Kaushiki's performance in the VIDEO FOOTAGE that I had of this part of the recording. hope you'll enjoy this video... If you like this video and would like to hear more, I'd like to recommend my 90-minute radio-portrait on Kaushiki Chakrabarty and the Patiala Kasur Gharana, broadcasted on 30th November 2007 at dutch radiostation De Concertzender. You can listen on demand to this radioprogramme via www.concertzender.nl by clicking on the speaker icon on that page. have fun... Copyright of this video: Pieter de Rooij, Tonal Ties Productions.
Embedding the clip is of course ok, BUT otherwise no further use, no copying and no publication of this material is allowed without my permission. Since there's been quite some response and enthusiasm for the youtube-video's and the 'Gharana radio-special' (for info on the radio-special see my weblog www.tonalties.nl ) I produced this year on ragasinger Kaushiki Chakrabarty I think publishing a very nice excerpt of Kaushiki's great concert on 15th of April this year in Amsterdam will be appreciated by all admirers of her singing. It's a 10-minute excerpt of Kaushiki's rendition of raag Multani in Amsterdam. On tabla: Subhashish Bhattacharjee, on harmonium: Vyasmurti Anandteerth Katti. Notice the big difference (and improvement) in sound compared to the sound in the earlier published video-portrait and in the radio-portrait, where I used excerpts of the same Amsterdam-concert. In this youtube-video I think the overall sound is better than in both the video-portrait and in the radio-special. I combined and mixed the recording made in the concert hall (as represented in the video-portrait of Kaushiki) with the (reference-)recording of the Theatre of the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, a recording I used in the radio-portrait. The result of this new mix (out of the two 'problematic' earlier ones) is a sound that's hopefully more satisfying on all levels. But this is probably of no concern to most of you watching this video. Hope you'll enjoy it! Copyright of this video ...

While searching for classical songs on Raag Mand or Misra-Mand, I landed on the website of Prof.Basavi Mukherjee, an eminent musician and an erudite scholar on classical music. I listened to her songs with rapt attention and also read her descriptive essays on classical music, especially the similarities as well as differences between Hindusthani and Carnatic classical music. Here, Prof.Basavi Mukherjee M.Phil. of Santiniketan sings a Meera Bhajan in Raag Mand. Please Visit the blog : www.ragaculture.com So remarkable the meera bhajan I listened to that I thought of penning an essay on Raag Mand. You will soon find it in my blog: movieraghas.blogspot.com The website of Prof.Basavi Mukherjee is an ocean of knowledge for music lovers especially of the classic type.
