English Translation by Ramesh Krishnakumar, to the stirring rendering by MSSubbulakshmi This Divine Hymn to the Goddess of Prosperity is considered to be powerful and beneficial to those who recite or listen. Adi Sankara one of the greatest Hindu saints was born in a poor Brahmin family in Kerala. After his initiation into the spiritual path, it was a routine to beg alms for his food. One day when he went to a Brahmin house, the lady of the house was so poor that she did not have anything to give him. She searched hard and found one small fruit of (amla) gooseberry, which she gave to Sankara the boy. He was so touched by her gesture that he composed these 21 mellifluous hymns on Goddess Lakshmi. It is said that hearing this Goddess lakshmi poured golden gooseberries as rain into the poor womans house. Even today it is believed that poverty would be banished by singing this hymn.
Adi Shankaracharya was possibly one of the great saints of his time.. After brahmopadesa, as is usual during those times, he was asked to beg alms for his lunch. One day when he went to a Brahmin house, the lady of the house was so poor that she did not have anything to give him. She searched...
Adi Shankara became a monk at a very young age. The story goes that one day, he went begging for his food as was the custom, and arrived at the hut of a very poor Brahmin woman. The woman had no food at home except an Amla fruit (gooseberry), and she gave this to Adi Shankara. He was so overwhelmed by her generosity and so moved by her poverty that he extemporaneously composed and sang the Kanakadhara Stotram in front of the woman's hut. This prayer instantly invoked the Goddess Mahalakshmi, who rained down a shower of gold for the woman. Each piece of gold was shaped like a gooseberry. Reciting this prayer is said to eliminate poverty, but I don't think it's that simple. I think the key factor in this miracle was the kindness of the woman-- she didn't have the heart to send away a hungry little boy emptyhanded, so she gave him the only food she had. Such a simple thing to do, but how many of us could do it? Apparently, the woman's descendants still live in the place where this miracle took place, in the town of Kaladi, Kerala. Kaladi is also Adi Shankara's birthplace. Album: Divine Chants of Mahalakshmi. Singer: Uma Mohan.

Singer: Kamala Kumari Nagisetty Kanakadhara stotram is a very famous and holy script authored by none other than Sri Sri Adi Sankaracharya. The story behind the stotram goes thus.Shankaracharya ones goes to a very poor woman's house for Biksha. Asis the tradition in olden days, you can never turn around a personwho comes for Biksha. That poor lady has just one amla (usili kaya in telugu) with her in her house. She had planned to eat it that day as she had nothing else with her. But when the jagadguru himself had come to her house for biksha, she couldnt help but give her only possession, the amla. Jagadguru immediately understands this. He comes into her courtyard and prays to lord mahalakshmi in 22 beautiful verses, starting as // Angam Hare Pulaka bhooshana mashrayanthim // At the end of this 22 verses, Goddess MahaLaksmi is so pleased with Sankaracharya that he gives him a darshan and grants him a boon. He says he being a sanyasi doesnt want anything, and instead asks goddess to grant wealth to this poor woman. Lakshmi is very pleased with sankaracharya as he does not want anything for himself and instead prays for the well being of others. She immediately rains golden Amlas on the poor womans house. Adi Sankaracharya's Kanakadhara Stotram is the 21 mellifluous hymns on Goddess Lakshmi to alleviate Suffering and Grant Boons. Kanakadhara Stotram is a powerful Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of prosperity (both material and spiritual), wealth, fertility, good fortune, and courage. Goddess Mahalakshmi is the divine consort of Lord Vishnu and is believed to protect her devotees from all kinds of miseries in life and money-related sorrows. Sri Kanakadhara Stotra is composed by Guru Adi Shankaracharya, a great Indian philosopher who introduced the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. It is believed that Adi Sankaracharya composed Sri Kanakadhara Stotram in praise of Goddess Lakshmi and pray to the Goddess to shower wealth to a poor women. 'Kanaka' literally means "Gold" and 'Dhara' means "Stream".
Thus the stotra of Sankaracarya towards Goddess Lakshmi was sacred, famous and popular known as Kanakadhara Stotra. Bhagavatpada Sankaracarya's Kanakadhara Stotra also called by him as Surarnadhara Stotra studded with Anugraha Bijakshar as aiming at Sri Lakshmi. Lakshmi in her manifestation is Arogya Lakshmi (giver of health), Keerti Lakshmi (bestower of name and fame), Santana Lakshmi (blesses children and continuing progeny), Vijaya Lakshmi (ensures victory in all the efforts), Dhana Lakshmi (Showers continuing wealth, Dhanya Lakshmi (restores abundant crops), Moksha Lakshmi (grants liberation), Sowbhagya Lakshmi (unending harmony and auspiciousness), Santa Lakshmi (giving peace). Thus she is apparently one in all the eight forms (Ashta Lakshmi) who also confers Ashta Siddhis, which are Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Eesitva and Vasitva.for more details www.hindutara.com
