To get this entire 1 hour video, go to www.createspace.com Way back in 1964, New York filmmaker, David Hoffman was headed down with his new 16mm hand help camera (weight 49 lbs!) to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew." When this film aired on Public Television in 1965, TV Guide gave it a full-page positive review, because Americans had never seen a documentary on the roots of Bluegrass and Country music. Today, the dirt roads and the moonshine counties are largely modernized, and Bluegrass Roots, stands as a record of a uniquely talented group of people at a time just before the coming of television, changed them. www.createspace.com/204609
This is my brother Thomas and I clogging a duet routine we choreographed to "Blue's Berry Hill" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. We have both been clogging for about a year and a half now. We started beginner lessons with the Hi Horse Cloggers in Sept of 2005. We became members of the club and started performing in the spring of 2006. Here we are at our first competition, the First Annual Orange County Clogging Competition. We were very blessed to take home first place for this routine.

This video was originally shot by David Hoffman in 1964 and can be seen on YouTube under the title "Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video Ever Made" The music is LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem If this video made you smile and you want to do something in the spirit of Christmas visit this website and donate to a wonderful community development project in Uganda. www.nambicommunityresourcecentre.com
In 1987 Channel 4 television commissioned John Floyd (aka The Third Earl) to make a television programme about folk music emanating from West Yorkshire and Sowerby Bridge in particular. This particular excerpt is of the late (some say great) Jeremy Melonie performing the Traditional Idiot Clog Dance of Sowerby Bridge with two other self confessed loonies and Paul Grange on accordion. It is of course a well known fact that a lot of traditional dance sides have fools; and normally only one of them. Here in Sowerby Bridge we have three, not fools but, idiots. The first section of the dance is comprised of attempting to stamp on the nearest foot whilst circulating in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. The traditional Sowerby Bridge idiot felt no pain, so whereas the more sensible traditional sides try to avoid stamping on each others feet here there is a deliberate attempt to do just that. The second and third parts of the dance are more difficult to explain. We believe that the second part goes back to the time when idiots often failed to go to work and consequently needed a good kick up the arse to do so. Hopping was an important past-time. The best beers have been brewed in Yorkshire since the discovery of good ale and we believe the third and final part is a celebration of good hopping. If anyone recognises the other two un-named loonies, or alternatively if they are capable of recognising themselves, perhaps they would contact me and then I will be delighted ...
