The OIC team members get a safety briefing before departing Camp Paliwoda, Balad in an Army MRAP convoy. Camp Paliwoda, formerly known as FOB Eagle, was renamed in memory of Capt. Eric Paliwoda, who died January 2, 2004 when an enemy mortar round scored a direct hit on his room. Forward Operating Base Paliwoda is a former training base for Saddam Hussein's elite fighters. The convoy arrives at Tal Al Zatar Primary School. At the school the OIC team handout school supplies and Croc shoes to the children helped by the Mayor of Balad and other local officials. All the OIC team are overwhelmed with the warm welcome the receive.
I visited the community of Awaratei to explore the possibilities of helping develop tourism in the region and was treated to a warm welcome by the local school children. Their school is located in the middle of a beautiful valley most have to walk miles trhough the savanna and rain forests to get there everyday. We discovered that these children really need text books - since they are in a community some distance from Kamarata they tend to get forgotten.

On Wednesday, September 29, Hope on Wheels made one of its last September stops at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, IA. This was the first time that Hope on Wheels has made a donation to Blank Children's Hospital, and the staff were thrilled and provided a very warm welcome. Max Holmes, Sr. and Max Holmes, Jr. of Holmes Hyundai attended to help present the check. The Hope Grant will fund a new cancer survivorship program at the hospital, which will allow the doctors to work closely with childhood cancer survivors and coordinate their follow-up care. The grant will also allow the medical staff to educate other health care providers about the unique health needs of childhood cancer survivors throughout their lives, and counsel them on how to provide that care. We heard quite a bit about the health needs of childhood cancer survivors during this event, and it was a reminder of the fact that the health needs of childhood cancer survivors are unique, and often don't end when their childhoods do.

Special Spectators, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, creates magical days for seriously ill children and their parents at collegiate sporting events across the United States. Since 2002, we've provided the quintessential Saturday experience complete with tailgate parties, mascots, cheerleaders and marching bands for approximately 3800 children and parents. Over the last five years, we've hosted about 110 game day events that provide these kids with special access to people and areas of the stadium that are not accessible to most fans. Our youngsters tour locker rooms, meet coaches and walk on the field during a time out. The field visit is a powerful moment. While the kids stand on the field, a stadium announcement tells fans why the kids are attending the game, explains Special Spectators and asks the crowd to give the children a warm welcome to the stadium. Typically this results in a standing ovation. Special Spectators also coordinates student-athlete visits to children's hospitals. What we see during these visits is that a mutual admiration society is created. Clearly, these children view the athletes as heroes and the reverse is true as well. The athletes see what the children experience and more importantly, they are able to see the impact that they, as individuals, have on the children. This plants the seed of the gift of giving in the heart of the student athlete and, we believe, creates a commitment to service that extends into the future. The idea for ...

The Royal Manor of Portland gave a hearty welcome to Her Majesty and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, on 11 June 2009. They looked around the impressive new Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy at Osprey Quay, Portland - the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games sailing events. Beautiful sunshine, and cheered on by hundreds of flag-waving local school children. They chatted to past and aspiring Olympian sailors, at the " finest sailing waters in the world". At the brand new Portland Marina, the royal couple then boarded a luxurious Sunseeker motor yacht and set sail across Portland Harbour for Weymouth. Appropriately - the famous Sunseeker -as featured in 4 James Bond movies - is actually built at here Portland, and at Poole, Dorset. One of the sisters, Marjorie, is disdainful of both the children and Dr. Mike's insistence on seeing their ailing mother. Mrs. Quinn has two physicians: one is older and believes women should not be doctors while the other is much younger, smitten with Michaela, and believes she has the cure. Dr. Mike ends up curing her mother and earning Dr. Burke's esteem. In the meantime, Sully dreams about being in Boston, and sets out to join the four. Sully and the children accidentally stumble onto Michaela receiving a kiss on the hand by Dr. Burke. Matthew demands to go home, homesick and missing Ingrid. Elizabeth convinces Sully to wear Boston finery and to the delight of Dr. Mike he looks incredibly dashing. Sully, with new finery, takes Michaela out to a sumptuous dinner for two with dancing afterwards. The two then attend an opera, where Dr. Mike must explain what is going on to a long-suffering Sully.
